eldra kaitis

eldra kaitis, a force-sensitive rutian twi'lek, was a padawan during the final years of the republic.

around 32 BBY, sometime briefly prior to the invasion of naboo, her master ciaanna sartris and her were attacked on a diplomatic mission, which saw her master killed and her a prisoner to the xrexus cartel. the leader of the cartel intended to sell the padawan to the highest bidder.
hearing of the auction, sith apprentice darth maul, who had been burning to finally test his abilities against a jedi (and thought himself in secrecy from his master darth sidious), infiltrated the event with his hired bunch of bounty hunters; cad bane and his crew. they ambushed the winning bidders in their ship, which, unbeknownst to them, had been sabotaged by xrexus.
crashlanding on a moon of drazkel, they survived the crash, but then were hunted down for sport. eldra and maul briefly teamed up to fend of the hunters before they engaged in the duel he sought from her, to test his abilities.
even though she was only a padawan learner and facing a sith lord, she held her ground on even footing and engaged him without fear, and managed to trap maul beneath a pile of rocks after a calculated throw of her lightsaber. the zabrak, however, survived the attack and killed her with a single strike before she could make a move to finish him.

she was the first jedi to fall by the hands of the sith in a thousand years.

HEADCANON INFORMATION
find below a collection of headcanons i have for eldra; bear in mind that none of this is established in canon, and simply information you might find interesting when interacting with her.

𝞷 she's actually half twi'lek/half zabrak, though coming after her mother primarily makes it hard to spot. her mother, aoki (aoki'jvope), was a twi'lek from ryloth who, on her travels, met the dathomirian zabrak nanro.

𝞷 eldra has very little memory of her parents since the jedi found her rather early.

𝞷 knowing that her father was a zabrak caused her to obsess and worry about suddenly growing horns when she was young. she didn't want to grow them, fearing that the other younglings would make fun of her if she did grow horns. (once a teen, she realized that wasn't gonna happen and felt rather silly for worrying that much, in hindsight.)

𝞷 as a youngling, eldra was quite the handful. she struggled to sit still, had a lot of energy and fought to focus. jedi master ciaanna sartris saw her potential past her flaws, though, and took eldra as her padawan. a lot of what she's taught her still sticks. they had a close bond, so losing her master was absolutely devastating.

𝞷 eldra is very prone to force visions. they usually come to her in dreams, are mostly rather incoherent, and otherwise mostly unhelpful. but it feeds into her underlying anxiousness; knowing something's (gonna be) wrong, but not knowing just what.

𝞷 she was slightly younger than maul when she faced him. (around 17 in 32 BBY)

𝞷 with her ties to dathomir, she is predestined, which was what maul sensed about her in their brief time together. the anger, and how he thought she'd be able to be tempted to the dark side. (this was also aided by the despair she'd felt when she was in the hands of the cartel; knowing it unlikely for the jedi to come looking for a doomed padawan.)

her universe

𝙄. 𝙑𝙀𝙍𝙎𝙀// S U R V I V O R
main verse. after she had buried maul under the rocks during their duel, eldra slipped away. one of the (now ownerless) ships of those hunting them provided her with the means of sending a a distress signal to the jedi order, and she proceeded to the nearest planet where she was rescued. (the ship didn't make the landing. she's not a pilot.)
upon her return to coruscant she was questioned about the events. assuming she had buried the zabrak, she left out that rather important detail... the emerging of a sith. not even a year later, the sith revealed themselves on naboo. and eldra was plagued by unimaginable guilt.

eldra moved forward in her training, soon passing the trials and becoming a formidable jedi knight soon after. but when maul emerged again, she finally broke her silence and admitted that she had withheld information, under the impression that the sith had died, and considering the stress she had been under at the time, her judgement of the situation had been clouded. being met with only mild understanding, she ended up feeling more betrayed herself, alienated and simply not understood; and she felt herself proven right: when she was awaiting her fate in that cell, she knew the jedi order wouldn't come for her. so she decided it was the best if she left the order.
she wanted to build a life of her own. another of the many thoughts that had plagued her in her cell; all her life she'd lived for the jedi. was she right to feel regret at that moment, knowing that she was most likely getting killed very soon? now she had the time to find out. to find herself.

𝙄𝙄. 𝙑𝙀𝙍𝙎𝙀// A F T E R M A T H
eldra survives order 66, and sees herself at an advantage when evading inquisitors. finally her experience fighting sith comes in useful. but she can't help but feel like she's cheated. what if this was the indirect "thanks for keeping your mouth shut"?

𝙄𝙄𝙄. 𝙑𝙀𝙍𝙎𝙀// B E T R A Y A L
maul had sensed it, the anger deep within eldra. and he tempted her to the dark side. teaching her the ways of the sith was a betrayal to his master - maybe even greater than revealing his existence would've been. and eldra, in turn, betrayed the jedi order to become allies; becoming a duo, a force to be reckoned with, but ever opposing the most powerful being in the galaxy. (details about just when maul made the step to turn her can be discussed beforehand.)

the years before the events of the comic. simple padawan shenanigans on coruscant.

(jedi!maul au) eldra was captured by criminals and jedi master maul is sent to rescue her. since she lost her master and there being an undeniable synergy between the two, maul took over her training. they make for quite the duo, and sometimes might be a bit... hard to handle.
